Grand River Conservation Authority to complete drone inspection and survey in Galt

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has engaged AECOM Canada ULC to complete a drone inspection and survey of the West Flood Protection Wall, located along the Grand River’s west bank in the community of Galt, in Cambridge.

The west bank of the Grand River, from James St. to 5^th Ave., will be observed. Weather permitting, the drone inspection and survey is scheduled to take place on August 14 and 15, 2025, and is required to support upcoming rehabilitation work to the West Flood Protection Wall. Licensed drone pilots will perform the survey in full compliance with all applicable Transport Canada regulations.

The West Flood Protection Wall has been identified as requiring preventative maintenance and minor structural repairs based on findings from previous investigations, which were completed in 2022 by AECOM Canada ULC. The goal of the upcoming work is to prolong the service life of the wall and ensure it continues to meet the necessary standards for flood protection.

The purpose of the drone inspection and survey is to review overall wall condition and highlight areas of interest for the structural engineer to investigate in further detail. The survey will review topographic items such as shoreline location, water elevation, location of trees, vegetation, and other features. This will help identify the best approach to designing the rehabilitation work. The GRCA has retained AECOM Canada ULC to complete the detailed design of the rehabilitation work.

As the rehabilitation project progresses into detailed design and construction timing is confirmed, residents in the area will receive a project update letter, containing details of the proposed works, anticipated impacts, and a construction schedule.
