Apps' Mill Nature Centre has been a beacon of outdoor education for students in Brantford and the County of Brant for more than 35 years.
The centre offers a wide range of curriculum-based school programs, family nature events and day camps, all focused on our natural world. Since the centre opened in 1980, more than 150,000 people have discovered the great outdoors at Apps' Mill. In many cases, they are the children of the original students.
Nature should be accessible to everyone and this project will open the centre to even more people. The project is the most significant upgrade to the centre in its history.
Work will include installation of a small elevator, construction of an accessible washroom and improvements to the lower-level classroom areas. The project also includes better storage for learning equipement like snowshoes and dip nets.
An outdoor classroom will be built to bring kids even closer to nature and two all-terrain wheelchairs have already been purchased for students to use at all five GRCA nature centres with the support of the Walton Group of Companies.
More than $400,000 has been raised to complete the project. Lead supporters include S.C. Johnson & Son, Limited, The Cowan Foundation, King Packaged Materials and the Estate of Mary Stedman as well as the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.
The project is now complete! Students returned to the Nature Centre in late February.
You can still help! We are seeking about $15,000 in funding to support renewal of durable learning furniture for students at the Centre. Please click the Donate Now button to help equip the next generation of nature learners!
